Proper ways to use eye drops

18 August, 2023

Eye drops are among the most common medications in the home medicine cabinet. However, only some know how to use eye drops correctly.

Proper ways to use eye drops

1. Things to do when using eye drops

  • Wash hands with soap and water before applying eye drops.
  • Check its expiry date.
  • After opening the vial, write on the vial the date you opened the cap because eye drops should be used within One month of opening.
  • If the medication is in suspension, shake the vial well before instilling it in your eyes.
  • Tilt your head back, gently pull the lower eyelid, and apply one or two drops.
  • After opening, place the cap upside down.
  • After instillation, rub the nose and corners of the eyes so that the medicine does not enter the throat through the nose.
  • After instillation, close your eyes for 10 seconds, then open your eyes and start blinking; when normal vision begins to return, return to your normal activities.
  • Hold for 5-10 minutes before instilling the second medication to avoid washing away the previous drug.
  • If you need to use both the drops and the ointment, use the slides first, then the cream, and 2 hours later if you need another drop.
  • Monitor your daily dose.
  • Take the correct dose prescribed by your doctor.

2. What not to do when using eye drops

  • Do not arbitrarily use it when your eyes are red.
  • When using eye drops, do not let the vial’s tip touch your eyes.
  • Do not put the medicine on the eye’s iris (cornea).
  • Do not instill medication when using contact lenses.
  • Do not apply two types of eye drops at the same time.
