Eye Squinting in Children: Can be Treatable?

15 September, 2023

Strabismus (also known as squint) is an eye disease affecting not only the patient’s vision but also aesthetics. So can squint be cured or not? How is recovery after treatment?

Read this article consulted by Dr. Quynh Ha, Refractive & Lasik expert @ Prima Saigon to immediately learn about the disease, its causes, and effective ways to treat strabismus so that patients can have normal vision as well as regain confidence in life.

What is strabismus? Why do patients have squint eyes?

Strabismus is a condition in which the two eyes do not look in the same direction. And cross-eyed eyes look in many different directions. One eye can look straight, while the other eye can look inward, outward, up or down. Eye shifts can be permanent or temporary. The eyes that look straight and the eyes that look sideways can be interchanged or alternate. The disease can occur in both children and adults. It can even be passed down in families.

The most common symptoms of squint are that the two eyes do not look in the same direction, double vision (diplopia), or the patient also has eye fatigue.

Lác (hay còn gọi lé) là một trong những bệnh về mắt không chỉ ảnh hưởng đến thị lực mà còn thẩm mỹ của người bệnh.
Strabismus (also known as squint) is one of the eye diseases that not only affects the patient’s vision but also aesthetics.

There are many causes of strabismus including:

  • Congenital strabismus: This is the most common type of squint in clinical practice. Patients with squint aged 6 months or older are called congenital strabismus.
  • Strabismus due to cataract and fundus disease.
  • Strabismus due to hypertension and diabetes causes damage to the nerves that control the eye muscles, causing squint.
  • Strabismus due to congenital severe myopia.
  • Strabismus due to thyroid disease.
  • Strabismus is caused by an eye injury that damages the muscles or causes the muscles to become stuck.

According to research, there are 2-3 million Vietnamese people with strabismus. If this disease is not detected early and treated promptly, it can affect the patient’s vision. At the same time, it causes low self-esteem due to eye aesthetic problems. In addition, if the disease occurs in children who are still in the visual development stage, it can cause loss of vision (amblyopia), loss of depth perception, poor ability to judge distances, and easily miss stepping on stairs.

Can strabismus be cured and how to treat it?

According to Dr. Quynh Ha, Refractive & Lasik expert @ Prima Saigon, the disease is completely treatable. However, the level of recovery and treatment goals are different for each person. It depends on the cause, age, and duration of illness.

In ophthalmology, the main goal of treatment is to have the best binocular vision. Helps patients see 3-dimensional images and have convenience in life, living, studying, and work…

For children, the ability to regain vision is higher than that of older people and the level of recovery is best in children under 3 years old.
For children, the ability to regain vision is higher than that of older people and the level of recovery is best in children under 3 years old.

For children, the possibility of regaining vision is higher than for older people. The best level of recovery is in children under 3 years old. Therefore, parents who discover that their children have squints should take them to see a specialist for advice and treatment as soon as possible.

For adults with strabismus, most treatment is for cosmetic purposes only.

There are many treatment methods available including:

  • Optical correction.
  • Practice gathering and glancing.
  • Covering the eyes to treat amblyopia.
  • Inject Botulinum Toxin to weaken the opposing muscle to the paralyzed muscle. Eye surgery to correct eyeball misalignment.

To determine the appropriate treatment method, patients need an in-depth ophthalmological examination. Especially for children, the eye examination process may require multiple follow-up examinations to choose the optimal treatment option.

Dr. Quynh Ha, Refractive & Lasik expert @ Prima Saigon shared: “Patients and family members should avoid self-treating “mild strabismus” (needle cross-eye) based on experience or word of mouth. Because it will be possible to miss the golden time in treating strabismus (under 3 years old for congenital strabismus).

Surgery treats both the goal of maintaining binocular vision and aesthetic goals. The success rate of strabismus surgery is over 95% for cosmetic purposes. As for the goal of maintaining binocular vision in young children, the earlier it is done, the higher the success rate.

Strabismus surgery is performed using local anesthesia. Includes numbing drops and anesthetic injections with gentle pressure. Completely painless during the surgery. For young children, surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Strabismus surgery does not require hospitalization, patients can go home immediately after surgery.

Treatment costs

To know the right treatment method for yourself and the corresponding fee, patients need to get advice from a doctor. At Prima Saigon, surgery costs range from 5-10 million VND depending on the severity of the disease. The method of anesthesia or general anesthesia depends on whether the doctor needs to intervene in 1 or 2 eyes to treat strabismus.

If you are still wondering about strabismus for yourself and your loved ones. Especially for young children, make an appointment immediately with Prima Saigon to receive timely advice and effective treatment.
