Lasik and Relex Smile are laser vision correction procedures that are meant to help patients with refractive errors to see clearer. Lasik and Relex Smile both change the corneal curvature, but do not affect the structure of the eye.

While Lasik is a procedure which uses a microkeratome blade to create a corneal flap and then applies a multi-point laser to change the corneal structure, Femtosecond Lasik Femtosecond Lasik uses Femtosecond Laser solely to form a corneal flap and direct multi-point Excimer Laser on the inner corneal parenchyma to treat refractive errors. ReLEx SMILE uses Laser Femtosecond to separate the cornea and through a very small incision (3mm) in the corneal edge, extract the separated tissue core out.

Lasik procedure is usually done quickly and it takes about 15 minutes for both eyes. Not only choosing the right refractive surgery for eyes is important, but also knowing how to take care of your eyes after surgery is very essential for your eyes’ health. In this article, Prima Medical Center Saigon will provide you some information regarding post-operative eye care.
Do not drive on the first day after the surgery because you vision might not fully restored
Eat as normal, but avoid alcohol consumption
You can shower on the first day after the surgery but please avoid getting any soap or water in the eyes. After 3 days, you can shower and clean your face normally.
Avoid sleeping on your stomach because this action will put a lot of pressure on your eyes

Eye hygiene and protection
After surgery, you may shed tears, so you can use a clean cloth or a soft tissue to clean around your eyes and avoid getting the fluids back into the eyes which can cause infection.
Always avoid rubbing your eyes. Instead, use lubricating drops when they feel irritated.
Use sunglasses or protective glasses. The glasses will block out smoke, dust and other potentially irritants.
Avoid splashing water in the eyes for the first 3 days after surgery
Work
After 4 – 6 hours after the surgery, you can do some gentle exercises such as opening your eye or reading book
One day after surgery, you can work normally with computers and phones, but please do not perform any heavy tasks.

Use protective glasses
Protective glasses are used after surgery, sunglasses can be used to replace protective glasses that the hospital provides when going outdoors to avoid wind and dust affecting the eyes.
Wearing hospital protective goggles when you go to bed as you may accidentally rub your eyes when you sleep (close attention must be paid in the first 3 days after surgery)
For eye drops, oral medications, please follow the dosage prescribed by your doctor. In the case of patients who do not follow the doctor’s instructions but use them on their own, the risk of infection will increase, and also has the potential to affect recovery after surgery.
Before using your eye drops, please wash your hands thoroughly with soap.
Wipe around your eyes slowly and gently with a clean gauze pad.
Do not touch the eyes or eyelashes with the tip of the dropper.
Do not use eye drops continuously, each eye drop is about 10 minutes apart.
If eye drops come out, use a clean cloth or a soft tissue to absorb to avoid getting the fluids back into the eyes causing infection..
Within a month after surgery, do not use eye ointment that has been opened for more than 20 days, even if the medication in the vial remains.
To the second month, you can use eye drops until the end, but not more than 01 month after opening day.
Post-surgery re-examination
Please remember the schedule of regular check-ups after surgery: after 1 day, 1 week and 1-3-6-12 months.
If you experience any irritation or any discomfort, please contact your hospital right away
After the surgery, some people will find it hard to read up close because the eyes will need time to adapt to the new condition. This problem will gradually improve after 1-3 weeks. During this time, you will still be able to use your eyes to study and work normally. Doing some eye exercises can have positive effects on the healing process.
Complications
Some minor discomfort and soreness after SBK Lasik and Femtosecond Lasik. About 3 weeks, this problem will disappear.
Dry eye symptom will occured for a while, so using artificial tears eye drops will help the eyes feel more comfortable
During the surgery, an instrument called a lid speculum will be used to hold your eyelids open. As a result, after the surgery, the eyelid may feel tight, sore and difficult to open. This condition will be disappeared after few days
Some people may develop night vision problems after lasik surgery due to the eye still need time to adapt
Refractive error makes the eyes weaker and it also affects the retina’s health. Refractive surgery such as Lasik and Relex Smile is performed to correct refractive error by making subtle changes to the shape of the cornea, and they do not not strengthen the retina. Therefore, there are cases, the patient’s eyes do not achieve maximum vision due to weak retina (vision after surgery can be predicted by ophthalmologists).
