How to minimize myopia in children?
5 October, 2023
Children – the age most susceptible to myopia and especially the number is increasing in recent times. So how to minimize the increase in children?

Children with mild myopia under 3 Diop are still relatively able to live without glasses
1. Wear glasses to correct myopia
The period before the age of 10 is a period when children are very susceptible to myopia, wearing glasses and adjusting the correct level will help children’s vision develop and reach the optimal level. Not only that, it is also more convenient for children to live and study and avoid negative consequences later on, to avoid conditions such as amblyopia, strabismus or refractive errors of two different eyes from 2 Diop. above).
Children with mild myopia under 3 Diop are still relatively able to live without glasses, so you should wear glasses when you need to see far. In contrast to children with severe myopia, whose nearsightedness is 3 Diop or more, they should wear glasses regularly.
2. Adjust daily habits to prevent myopia
Myopia is partly due to asymmetry between the structures involved in the refraction of the eye, so preventing myopia is one of the near-impossible things. But it’s not like we can’t do anything to limit the baby’s nearsightedness. Parents can adjust their baby’s daily routine to minimize the risk factors or progression of myopia.
Children should be encouraged to participate in more outdoor activities, avoid reading books at a distance that is too close (under 30cm), for longer than 2 hours and should read books in adequate light conditions.
Recent studies have shown that the relative farsightedness of the peripheral retina when wearing eyeglasses may increase the risk of developing myopia. Therefore, many people now choose to have their children wear gas-permeable rigid contact lenses during sleep to correct the corneal surface – Ortho-K method.
Children only need to use Ortho-K glasses when sleeping and in the morning can comfortably function without wearing glasses or contact lenses. It can be said that this is a safe method to help eliminate the need for non-invasiveness, but also works to reduce or stop the progression of myopia, especially in young children.
