Swollen Eyes – Causes and How to Prevent

26 August, 2023

Swollen eyes are familiar to many people and include many types with varying degrees of severity. Please find out the causes of eye swelling and how to prevent it through the article below!

What is a swollen eye?

Swollen eyes are swelling in the tissues around the eyes, usually in the upper eyelids and under eye bags. When the eye is swollen, depending on the cause of the disease, the patient may experience symptoms such as pain or itching, red eyes, eye inflammation, narrowing of vision due to swelling, etc.

Cause of swollen eye

There are many reasons for swollen eyes, but some of the more common ones can include:

Eyes that store water

Suppose the patient often has swollen eyes after waking up in the morning. In that case, the cause of this condition may come from adding too much sodium (salt) to the diet, causing the eyes to retain water and swell during sleep.

Too much salt in your diet can cause your eyes to retain water and swell.

Age

Swollen eyes can come from age causes. Older people experience this condition more because the skin around the eyes ages becomes thinner, making the eyelids and eye bags more prone to swelling and sagging.

The eyes of older people are often more swollen due to the aging process

Cry

Swollen eyes are normal when crying because salt in tears can cause water retention. Suppose the patient wipes or rubs their eyes while crying. In that case, the swelling may be aggravated by the additional eye irritation from the impact force.

Crying will cause your eyes to swell due to water retention

Allergy

With some eye conditions more sensitive than usual, eye swelling can also come from an allergy to pollen. In this case, the eyes will be puffy, along with some other symptoms such as watery eyes and a runny nose.

Eyes can swell due to exposure to allergens

Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis can also cause eye swelling, accompanied by symptoms such as eye irritation, discomfort, redness, and pus discharge in the eye. An infection or an allergy can cause this.

Conjunctivitis can cause eye swelling

Blepharitis

Inflamed eyelids can lead to eye swelling. The symptoms of blepharitis are similar to those of conjunctivitis, so it is often difficult for patients to distinguish and possibly misdiagnose the condition. To avoid confusion, patients can visit their eyes at reputable medical facilities and receive advice from doctors.

How to prevent swollen eye

To effectively prevent eye swelling, the most important thing is to find the right cause. Therefore, experts often encourage patients to go to an ophthalmology facility for an eye exam to have the correct prevention method.

  • Using a higher-head pillow helps to stimulate water retention in the eye area.
  • Reduce the amount of salt in the diet, thereby limiting water retention that causes eye swelling.
  • Refrigerate used tea bags for 30 minutes and then place them over your eyes for 15 minutes. The natural herbal nutrients from the tea and the low temperature will help reduce eye swelling.
  • If there is no tea bag, the patient can replace it with cucumber or a towel soaked in cold water to achieve the same effect (Do not apply to eyes with signs of keratitis or blepharitis).
  • Applying cucumber will help reduce eye swelling
  • Avoid contact with allergens such as pollen, dust, animal hair, etc.
  • Although eye swelling is not a severe disease, it can affect the patient’s aesthetics and daily activities.

When it comes to eye swelling, the most important thing is to find out what’s causing it to get the proper treatment and prevention. In addition, maintaining a healthy lifestyle also contributes to protecting the eyes from harmful agents and limiting swelling.
