Have you paid attention to your eye health?

25 October, 2023

Did you know that worldwide about 2.2 billion people are suffering from myopia and vision impairment from refractive errors? The amazing thing is that up to 1 billion of them could have prevented vision problems with early screening and detection. However, regular eye examinations are still not paid attention to by everyone.

About refractive errors

The eyes have the same structure and function as a camera. Abnormalities in the shape or length of the eye are likened to a misaligned lens, causing light to not be focused properly on the retina and vision to become blurred.

Myopia is a common refractive error. Adults and children with nearsightedness may have difficulty working, studying and living. Refractive errors in general and myopia in particular, if not detected early and treated promptly, will cause serious vision impairment.

The hidden costs of myopia

Vision problems and refractive errors can occur at any age. According to statistics, untreated myopia alone costs the world up to 244 billion USD in labor productivity each year. And on average, 1 in 5 children has eye problems. Without timely care, the child’s quality of life and learning efficiency will be affected and reduced.

“Pandemic” of myopia

By 2022, about 2.6 billion people worldwide will have nearsightedness and this number continues to increase until now. What is worrying is that in some areas, myopia begins at a very early stage, especially in children as young as 5 years old. By 2030, an estimated 3.36 billion people will be nearsighted.

Some common symptoms of myopia

Tips to effectively reduce myopia with advice from experts:

  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule: take a 20-second break to look at objects 20 feet (six meters) away every 20 minutes, after doing close-up activities.
  • Spend at least 90 minutes outside every day participating in sports activities.
  • Wear glasses according to instructions and at the correct level to limit increased nearsightedness.
  • Get regular eye exams to detect any eye and vision problems early.

Many cases of nearsightedness do not show any symptoms, making it difficult to accurately determine the time when vision is impaired. Therefore, regular eye examinations are the most optimal method to diagnose and treat myopia early, helping to prevent and avoid dangerous complications.
