Myopia in Children
18 September, 2023
Myopia in children is a condition in which the eyes are blurred when seeing far away compared to near vision. The earlier a child develops myopia, the more likely they are to develop high myopia as an adult. It tends to increase rapidly between the ages of 5 and 15 and usually stabilizes in the early 20s.
REASON FOR MYOPIA
The causes often arise from the overdevelopment and elongation of the eyeball. This results in light rays from distant objects focusing in front of the retina instead of on the retina. As a result, distant objects are seen to be blurred but near objects are still clear.
The exact cause of myopia is unknown, but several risk factors increase the likelihood of myopia, such as genetics and environmental factors such as lack of outdoor activity and looking too closely. It can lead to complications including retinal tear and detachment, macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma.
THE TREATMENTS OF MYOPIA
Treatment options include wearing glasses or contact lenses to see distant objects clearly and LASIK surgery. However, these treatments do not cure myopia and the risk of complications remains. Prevention and early screening of myopia is important, including promoting good eye care habits, being outdoors, and limiting screen time.
To help treat or prevent myopia in children, parents can encourage good eye care habits from an early age, encourage outdoor sports and activities, limit screen time, Encourage reading in good light and take frequent breaks near work or screens. It’s also important to consult with your doctor about the latest advances in the field and consider interventions such as eye drops or specialized glasses.
