Three things to know about PTERYGIUM

15 August, 2023

Pterygium is one of the eye diseases understood as a condition in which a white film or thin tissue develops on the conjunctiva, most of which begins at the inner corner of the eye over time. It grows gradually, invasively covering part of the white part of the eye, affecting vision. Nightmares mainly occur in only one eye, but although rarer, there are cases in both looks called bilateral dreams.

Three things to know about PTERYGIUM

Vietnam is located in a tropical monsoon climate, has a long coastline along the country, with almost year-round sunshine, and has an agricultural economy, so the rate is high. The rate of monocular pterygium is from 5.2% to 19.56%, and the rate of binocular pterygium is 7.99%.

1. Pterygium: fibrovascular hyperplasia of the eyeball conjunctiva, fan-shaped, originating from the conjunctiva in the slit area and spreading to the cornea. Color from pink to red. Usually benign, joint between the ages of 20-40, and can develop from pterygium

2. Fatty dream: a yellow floating tumor on the conjunctiva, formed by the deposition of fat, calcium, and protein. Fatty goals usually do not spread to the corneal area, so it rarely affects the patient’s vision

Signs of eye disease

Mild-stage pterygium usually has no symptoms; it is just a fragile tissue covering part of the white part of the eye. During the development stage, some typical signs will appear as follows:

  1. Hot, burning eyes.
  2. Sometimes, irritation causes swelling of the eyes.
  3. Itching.
  4. Pain, red eyes.
  5. Clumsy, messy, as if a foreign body is in the eye.
  6. Visual impairment, blurred vision, or sometimes the pterygium develops, deforms, and spreads to the cornea.
  7. Astigmatism.
