Types of myopia

Myopia is divided into two types:

Simple Myopia: usually begins at school age. Mild and moderate degree of myopia (6 diopters or less), slow progression, little increase. Myopia level is usually stable when into adulthood, the complication rate is low.

Induced Myopia: often congenital, has family factors. Myopia is more than 6 diopters, the degree of myopia increases rapidly, even after reaching adulthood. Nearsightedness often has a risk of complications, poor prognosis for treatment of complications, and low vision recovery ability.

Common complications of severe myopia

Retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage:

The retina is a thin nerve membrane at the back of the eye. It captures light and converts into signals to be sent to the brain for analysis.

In the eyes of people with severe myopia, the axis of the eyeball is longer than normal. So it is easy to pull the retina, causing the peripheral area of the retina to gradually thin. Long-term can cause retinal tear. Pulling will cause retinal detachment and blood vessels are also at risk of rupture causing vitreous hemorrhage in the eye. These are serious complications, the ability to recover vision is very poor.

Cons:

Amblyopia is a condition in which vision is impaired. Because the brain does not receive all or part of the signals from the eye. It can occur in one eye or both eyes due to high refractive error or refractive error.
Amblyopia, if detected early and in time, can be treated to help children improve their vision (usually under the age of 6). But if they are over 6 years old, the recovery will be difficult despite exercise or surgery.

Strabismus (strabismus)

It is a condition in which the eyes are not in the normal balanced position. In people with high myopia, the coordination and convergence of the muscles is poor. It often leads to strabismus or alternating strabismus, causing aesthetic loss and loss of vision.

Strabismus can occur in one eye or in both eyes. Mild cases can be corrected by wearing glasses. More severe cases may require surgical intervention to restore vision as well as aesthetics for the patient.

Things to keep in mind when suffering from severe nearsightedness

In order to know if the baby has myopia, since when and how it progresses. We need to have an early screening at about 6 months old similar to regular check-ups, especially myopia type. Congenital vision is worrisome and requires early detection and intervention.

Patients need to be examined periodically every 6 months to check the refraction to adjust the glasses appropriately. Control the increase of myopia to prevent, minimize possible complications. Examine the fundus to detect complications. symptoms and receive prompt treatment.
