Prima Medical Center Saigon, Cataract

Introduction to Cataract Surgery

23 September, 2023

Prima Medical Center Saigon performs cataract surgery, a method of treating cloudy eyes that interfere with daily activities. This surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial lens (vitreous) that is implanted in the eye.

Phacoemulsification, abbreviated as Phaco, is the most common method to remove cataracts .

In Phaco/ Cataract surgery:

First, a small hole measuring between 1.8mm and 2.75mm is made in the cornea. Then, an ultrasound device is inserted through this hole into the eye to break the cataract into small pieces and help remove it from the eye.

  • After the cloudy lens is completely removed, the artificial lens is placed in the same position. Usually, the wound does not need stitches.
  • This cataract surgery method takes less than 30 minutes. This is a day surgery, so there is no need to stay in the hospital overnight.

An anesthesiologist accompanies you during surgery to provide sedation to keep you comfortable and relaxed. Depending on the case, you may not be able to fully fall asleep during surgery, but you will still feel comfortable. Eye drops and anesthetic injections will be used for maximum pain relief. It is important to cooperate by not talking or moving the head and body during surgery.

If you are considering cataract surgery to replace an artificial lens, you can discuss with the ophthalmologist @ Prima Medical Center Saigon  what type of lens is best for you. The artificial lens will determine your ability to see after surgery, strongly affecting your quality of life.

The following types of artificial lenses (IOLs) are available:

  • Standard Single Lens: The most commonly used lens type. Provides good general vision at a specific distance. Reading glasses may be required.
  • Toric glasses, minimizing astigmatism for people with high astigmatism. Toric glasses with monofocal and multifocal lenses
  • Multifocal Glasses: Provides good vision for both near and far distances without glasses. Very convenient because both near and intermediate vision for fixed distances can become clearer. However, some people may have difficulty reading fine print, especially in low light, and may experience glare and halos. For best results, this lens should be used in both eyes. Multifocal lenses are suitable for people who want to reduce their dependence on glasses for near and far vision. People with high astigmatism will need to use toric multifocal lenses, which are effective in reducing astigmatism.
